Gas Detector Care & Maintenance | Safety Support

gas detectors

In high-risk industrial environments, reliable safety equipment is essential. Gas detectors play a critical role in protecting workers by identifying hazardous atmospheres before they become life-threatening, which is why proper gas detector care and maintenance is essential in demanding industrial environments.

At Northern Metalic, our safety expertise is strengthened by our dedicated safety division, AAA Safety & Field Services in Fort St. John, whose team works closely with customers across Northern British Columbia and Alberta to support gas detection programs built for real-world conditions.

A Critical Safety System: Understanding Your Gas Detector

Gas detectors are designed to monitor atmospheric conditions and alert workers to the presence of dangerous gases. While manufacturers follow similar foundational principles in sensor design, each monitor has specific operating requirements that must be understood to ensure proper function.

Key elements of effective gas detector use include:

  • Device Familiarity: Understanding how your specific unit operates, alarms, and responds to environmental changes.

  • Routine Maintenance: Following manufacturer-recommended cleaning, testing, and calibration schedules.

  • Environmental Awareness: Accounting for temperature extremes, moisture, and contaminants that can affect performance.

  • Proper Storage and Handling: Protecting sensors and electronics when not in use.

Taking the time to learn and maintain the monitor that protects you is a critical step toward ensuring every worker returns home safely.

Why Gas Detector Care Matters on the Job

Gas detection equipment is not a passive tool, it must function accurately at all times. Improper care can compromise sensor sensitivity and lead to unreliable readings.

Here’s why consistent maintenance is essential:

  • Reliable Performance: Proper care ensures sensors respond quickly and accurately when hazardous gases are present.

  • Worker Safety: Well-maintained detectors reduce the risk of false readings or undetected hazards.

  • Operational Continuity: Preventing unexpected equipment failure helps avoid downtime and safety incidents.

  • Compliance Support: Following manufacturer specifications supports internal safety standards and site requirements.

Regular inspection and care help ensure that monitors perform as intended when conditions are at their most demanding.

Cold Weather Performance: A Key Consideration in Northern Regions

In Northern Alberta and British Columbia, gas detectors must operate reliably in extreme cold. Low temperatures can impact battery performance and sensor accuracy, making cold-weather durability a critical selection factor.

MSA ALTAIR® Gas Detectors are designed with these challenges in mind.

Electrochemical sensors traditionally rely on liquid electrolytes that may freeze around -28°C (-18°F). MSA’s advanced XCell® Sensor technology uses a specialized formulation that allows continued performance in temperatures as low as -45°C (-49°F)—making them well-suited for cold-weather worksites common throughout the region.

Proper Gas Detector Cleaning and Maintenance: Best Practices

Gas detectors are precision safety instruments, and improper cleaning is one of the fastest ways to compromise sensor performance. Using the wrong products can permanently damage sensors and reduce sensitivity.

Important considerations include:

  • Avoiding Harmful Substances: Alcohol-based cleaners, antifreeze, bleach (sodium hypochlorite), and silicone-based products can harm sensor performance and detector housings.

  • Using Approved Cleaning Solutions: Manufacturer-approved cleaners or compatible hydrogen peroxide–based solutions are recommended (you can use a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide in water with 5 minutes of contact time on the surfaces.) when routine cleaning is required.
  • Following Manufacturer Specifications: Cleaning methods, contact time, and frequency should always align with the device’s user manual.

  • Routine Cleaning: Clean the exterior of the device regularly using only a damp cloth. Do not use cleaning agents, as many contain silicone, which will damage the combustible sensor.
  • Dust and Dirt Exposure: Use a dry, soft bristled brush to remove any dust or dirt that has accumulated  on the apparatus, especially at the sensor openings. If there is a buildup of dust or dirt particles remaining in the sensor area after brushing, use a vacuum to remove remaining particles, but maintain at least a 1/2 inch distance from the gas detector.
  • Water Exposure: If the apparatus is exposed to water, turn the device sensor side down and gently shake water off the sensor area. Any remaining water can be removed with a clean dry cloth.
  • Seasonal Awareness: Extra care is required in cold environments where incompatible chemicals are commonly used on-site for other equipment.

The team at AAA Safety works closely with customers to ensure proper care procedures are understood and followed, helping extend equipment life and maintain dependable performance. However, if you’re not confident in your ability to clean your unit, it’s always best to consult our team of professionals to prevent voiding your warranty.
